The time for falling leaves and apple cider has finally come upon us and we couldn’t be more excited. Whether you’re a fan of carving pumpkins or creating your own Halloween costume, there’s something about fall that makes it a favorite for most. The key word being “most”, because not me, I just deal with it. I figured earlier in the month that one way I was to deal with this season change was by doing the few things I do enjoy and can do this time of year. I’m definitely not going to overload on pumpkins, in fact I’m leaning more towards less and incorporating more natural elements in my life, like foraged greens, a more strict yet easy going work routine, pairing down my home and adding more lightness to it, and a pretty soft blush and neutral wardrobe color palette.
Here are some of the things I’m planning on doing this Autumn….
1. Connect
This word has become my mantra for autumn. In order to deal with something we may not enjoy, it’s important to connect with it on some level, so that’s what I’m going to do this autumn and winter. On a personal level, I reached that point of the year where I’m focusing on my goal to strengthen my relationships and connect with others. With everything that has been going on around the world now more than ever we need to be there for others, and be grateful for that which we have. Reaching to make a call to aunt more often, rather than a text, send a thoughtful written note to your grandparents, or take action to volunteer in the many causes you can do to make our world a better place.

2. Visit a Sunflower Field
This may not be the easiest thing to see depending where you live, but I recently discovered a stunning one in New Jersey, and would love to go. The only downfall sunflower season doesn’t last as long as apple or pumpkins, so your window to see all these bright sunshine beauties is short, just like our gorgeous spring cherry blossoms.

3. Apple Picking
This is pretty much a given. Who doesn’t love going apple picking? Even if you don’t you’re almost sure to be treated to freshly baked apple cider donuts and warm cider to go with it. Last year I began using only New Jersey farm grown apples for the Dreamery’s pies, and this year I plan on exploring as many of this state’s northern farms as possible. Because of well…

4. PIE!
There will be plenty of pie to go around this autumn! It’s my favorite baking season, because I get to continuously bake my favorite desserts. I actually enjoy carving out days to just make dough, or binge a good show cutting apples and making filling.

5. Create & Redecorate
Like Spring cleaning, fall cleaning and redecorating is a must. Whether you love the fall, or like me prefer warm months, this is the perfect timing to give the spaces you see everyday a new lightness to them. Whether its a fresh coat of paint on the walls or your furniture, swapping in lighter curtains, turning old sweaters into new pillows, or simply framing photographs. I have a list of DIY’s I’ve been waiting for now to tackle. My bedroom and office are slowly getting redecorated, and it’s been in need of a much needed update.

6. Incorporate Natural Elements Indoors & Create
Bring the outdoors in with pretty branches still with a few leaves placed in a lovely vase, rustic wreaths and of course pretty hued pumpkins and squashes on your doorstep. You won’t find orange or red in my home, this autumn I’m drawn to light natural colors like soft greens, mustard yellow, and warm creams. Pumpkins will be few, giving way to beautiful branches and flowers that are uniquely perfect this season. I’m finishing up my tablescape moodboard {which I’ll be sharing next week} and you might be surprised to see my inspiration.

7. Photo the Foliage
For most who say autumn is their favorite, it’s because there isn’t anything quite like the leaves changing. Going out to photograph the sessional foliage basically forces me to deal with the changing of the season head on, and accept the lovely shades of burnt oranges and fiery reds. Being able to capture the changing of Mother Nature, helps me feel grounded during this time of year.

8. Go On More Hikes
The best excuse to get outside and enjoy nature while I still can and the cold drives me indoors for hibernation. It’s also just another reason to capture more colored leaf snaps. You get a different feeling when hiking in autumn, rather than spring or summer. Trees are more bare, losing their green making way for their period of rest too. It can be easier during these next two seasons to want to stay indoors, but getting into the mountains and trees is good for your mind and soul.

9. Savor the Season with Festivals
Along with Spring, September and October is a very popular time to host festivals. Apple picking, hay rides, Wine making, Octoberfest, food festivals, Pumpkin carving, Back to school, Return of fall tv. You’d be surprised how much going around, you’re just a click away from finding a really great thing to do this weekend. I’d love to do a tasting this year, maybe even while pumpkin picking, or attend a local food truck gathering. Go ahead embrace the small town charm!
10. Go to a Football Game
You definitely know autumn is near when preseason Football returns. Teams may be different, but it’s a time for us all to come together for the same reason — to watch America’s game with a drink in hand of course. Not into the game itself, but love entertaining? Why not have a casual sunday afternoon get together, fit with a simple charcuterie board, plenty of wine and even indoor s’mores!
