What is one of the most perfectly fitting summer birthday party themes? Why a pretty Under the Sea bash fit for any darling little Mermaid, that is! And this celebration filled with lovely florals in vintage containers and modern details was a quite a “fun splash” on this classic children’s birthday party theme. As someone who has a soft spot for mermaids, despite it’s popularity as a kids birthday party theme, it’s still one of those ideas that can be reinvented and done so uniquely each time.
For Olivia’s 6th birthday we were inspired by this simple but florally lush and dainty “sea” themed birthday, particularly the statement centerpiece. We loved that a simple wood block with taper candles in varying heights and colors was the focal point, something you wouldn’t ever think for a mermaid or under the sea party, but it was the perfect unique and modern piece to compliment the under the sea details. Sit back and enjoy all the lovely pictures below…..
Each table featured a wood block with taper candles in different heights and complimenting pink shades. Floral centerpieces were nestled alongside the candles — a loose organic arrangement with gorgeous Quicksand Roses, darling little Spray Roses, fragrant Baby Blue Eucalyptus and foraged greens and fillers — in mismatched vintage coupes, bud vases and colored glass containers. I wanted to create something that felt natural, as if picked from a garden, a “sea” garden that is…you know something Little Mermaid would create and style with all her “thingamabobs” and “whatzits”.
And no under the sea mermaid party is complete without sea shells, and lots of them!! Atop pieces of fishing net and the loveliest green colored sea glass…the centerpieces felt like they belonged in a beautiful mer-people party!
To uphold safety measures due to Covid-19 tables were spaced out amongst the family’s large yard, creating two separate seating and eating areas underneath tents, with extra tables and chairs for guests to spread out. Cocktail tables were also placed for extra eating locations, as well as seating areas to lounge with distance. Wipes, hand sanitizer and mask stations were setup throughout the party area too. Guests were mostly all family and close friends, please keep in mind all safety measures if you choose to have an outdoor party during this time as this virus is still very much unpredictable. I shared more tips and advice for having a safe and intimate, yet distant, party at home here, please read and implement these safety precautions.
Are you in love with this dessert table styling? I’ll let you take another moment to take in all the beautiful details….
I told you I had a soft spot for mermaids and anything sea related, so when designing this I wanted to create something that was simple, effortlessly beautiful and natural, not something so “themey under the sea”, but that was of course still fun and playful for darling Olivia’s 6th birthday.
That balloon Mermaid Tail display created by Life o’ the Party is a serious SHOWSTOPPER!! It totally made the party, the girls loved it and so did the mommas. The marquee letters spelling out the birthday girl’s name were another unique and fun touch. making the softness of the sheer draped linen and fishing net pop…..but so did the absolutely gorgeous cake and desserts made by CarSan Artisan Cakes!!
Every detail in the cake from the pretty pastels to the gilded shells and the delicate piped ruffles to resembles a mermaid’s scales, the adorable cookies and ice cream shaped cake pops decorated with even more under the sea details — were just amazing! These sweet treats would’ve been just as beautiful on their own, but a few extra florals and greens, colored sea glass, shells and starfish, aged woods, one of the most perfect air plants and oh yeah, the cutest jellyfish garland — certainly made this a wonder to see…
There was plenty for Olivia’s mermaid and merman friends to have summer fun and sun! They painted their own sea shells and sand dollars, decorated mini treasure chests and cooled off “making waves” on the waterslide!! The ice cream truck made a pitstop later in the afternoon, giving everyone a yummy treat to cool off and enjoy before having more under the sea fun!
I loved designing this “Under the Sea” Mermaid birthday bash filled with lots of pretty modern details and endless florals. It was a lot of Summer Fun!
Hope it inspires your summer birthdays next year!
