Autumn…I welcome your slowness.
I will approach this season, this year, with that same slowness.
With more ease, rest. A reset of sorts.
Diving deep within, appreciating the details right in front of me
that I love and am inspired by.
Cherishing those moments in time that are crafting a comforting new season…
To savor the quiet moments, to welcome the inspired stillness
brought on from comforting early Autumn days…
I began scrolling through my Pinterest Autumn board, on evening nights to relax, as if my brain leading up to a wedding needed more creative boost, but I love discovering and skimming through photographs, travels, recipes, stylings and all those creations and moments. While looking back at all the photographs that have recently caught my eye and sparked a moment of seasonal inspiration, I quickly noticed one thing, other than the obvious this season — the love of seeing the season and everything changing within in, it lovely color palettes. Colors that add the element and feeling I think why so many love this time of year. I have to hone in and really look closely to see the the things I do enjoy seeing, the things that make me smile when Autumn comes around every year.
I’m a lover of making a good mood board, turns out over the years I’ve created most mood boards and color palettes for the season of Autumn. I love the time I spend creating them, fueling my creativity, exciting me, the thrill of pairing complementing colors and images with other with just the right depth and textures to create the feeling you want to evoke within the next few months of Autumn.
The above photographs are ones I loved the most {out of the original list of ideas I had to pair down from}, but there was no hard choice in the feeling this group of photographs create, a lovely story of how I’m choosing to trail into Autumn…
Slowly.
Focusing on the simple comforts of the season,
the colors, the scents, the textured layers.
Its quiet warmth that makes you long to
envelope yourself within.
Take note of the slivers of joys throughout your days,
they will propel you to keep adapting to an ever changing life,
like the ever changing colors the early signs of Autumn show us.
My dear cousin share the weekly and wind down recordings by Niall Brescill and I simply love them, they calmness and quiet, quick reminders for each morning and evening. This morning’s words, the culmination of a week focused on the changing seasons and our moods, Niall so eloquently and soothing said these words that I’m certainly carrying with me this Autumn…
Nature prepares for the stillness of Autumn by shedding what is no longer needs. Leaves fall away. Flowers die, grass turns brown. But this Death is not final. It’s preparation from the Spring seeds planted for the next chapter.
The change of seasons can be heard. It’s a chance to regroup, to make new plans and promises. Change in the air spurs us to create change within ourselves.
Take the moments to honor Nature. Watch how Nature changes too. Adapts. Embraces whatever comes its way….whatever happens, Summer comes again. Every year. Celebrate this.
Like a tree letting go of its leaves, let go of any baggage weighing you down. It’s a good time to unload anything that no longer serves you. Release your dead leaves.
In Autumn, the gardener rakes up old leaves — not to get rid of what no longer serves them, but to make way for new growth.
— Niall Brescill
Soothing shades and tones in greens found in forest foliage I love oh so, muted terra-cottas, soft golden and earthy browns, calming early morning sea blues and the lightness and warmth of creams. A beautiful combination of colors and tones that make me appreciate the uniqueness of the season, if you can choose to focus on the, even smallest, of moments that throughly make you smile and feel full.
Every season has a vibe, a feeling, an emotion. And these tidbits, together create the comfort I seek this Autumn…
So let’s pick up that Pinterest skimming, again, I discovered I basically have pinned majority of my seasonal pins in color palettes. Why start a mood board from scratch, when I’ve already done it for myself! Now the fun part, to take in all these lovely photographs, take in their emotion, aesthetic, textures and shapes to find the color palette with just the right hues and tones of each. Goodness I love it!!
That’s what I love about mood boards, you can easily create them online. Or you can put on some relaxing jazz and bossanova, or whatever makes you feel good, and walk around your home. Really focus on the details from top to bottom. every which direction and nook. You’d be surprised at the things that stand out, mundane items you see everyday, or even cherished treasures you don’t give enough time of day to.
That’s what I did early in the week. After quite a busy week, and detailed packed wedding on Monday, my days of the week were thrown a bit off. And so too the up roaching start of the Autumn Equinox. Which I often kick off with my seasonal goals and mood.
I gathered pieces, tidbits here and there from every room, from my event pieces, and found a new love in looking at things with a fresh calm perspective, and just requiring and shining light on them in a new way.
Autumn is an opportunity to pause and reflect. It’s not been an easy year.
That’s how I’m approaching Autumn this year, particularly styling. I’ve added warmer and natural elements, and rearranged pieces around the house to create that sense of slow comfort I’d like to create for all this season. And other than the front door wreath, there are no pumpkins in sights….perhaps only in the kitchen.
Of course, knowing me, you know I sneak in shades of green in about every color palette and styling I create, no matter the season or look. I can’t help it. Green, you know the soft earthy greens in olives, and sage and eucalyptus, the colors that make me happy and comforted all the same. And I think there is something so lovely about showcasing greens for Autumn as an ode to the early brightness of the season that then befalls to colors, long gone the green and lingers every shade of brown.
