One of my favorite things about Portugal, is that you don’t need to go very far to see and experience something beautiful, historically old and especially, a breathtaking natural gem. A small country, but rich in nature’s beauty. It’s the one thing I miss dearly and crave in my life daily. September and October are great months for traveling around, as there are fewer tourists and summer immigrants visiting family, while schools and the normal routine have returned. And the weather is picture perfect! During my trip back this September, I didn’t have set plans of locations I needed to cross off my list. I simply wanted to go with the flow, embrace the natural hidden beauties in our surrounding areas, return to my favorites and savor as many moments with loved ones.
When it comes to the Serra da Estrela region, and surrounding locales, you don’t need a set itinerary or to go a long distance to find yourself exploring enchanting mountain landscapes. Or stumble upon quaint river beaches with crystal clear teal waters that remind you of a far-off tropical location. And the best part is you’ll almost always find an outdoor cafe or bar nearby to fully enjoy the magical scenery.

Sandomil
Located on the border of Serra da Estrela, you’ll come across the quaint town of Sandomil. Long known for its praia fluvial amongst the region’s locals, it still attracts those looking for a lovely nature corner to take a walk and a café on a Sunday afternoon. Or when the temperatures heat up, a place close by to cool off in the mountain waters of its river beach. It’s been a location where for many years, many have come to spend a weekend day with family and friends along with their picnics, and lunches to grill on their on-site barbecues.
An afternoon here doing so, is the epitome of simple pleasures. Maybe the weather is still perfect, and you’re looking to relax with a book after a work day, then lounge on one of their hammocks by the river and end the day on the right note…..
Viseu
Although not technically within the Serra da Estrela, Viseu is its own district and the city itself is one of my favorites. Less than an hour from the Seia area, it’s a city I often go to. It’s full of history and bustling with everything at your fingertips, yet still feels small town. There are moments of the day where the streets empty and quiet, or where the small shops, cafes, and fill with revelry. And during the month of August to September the city lights up with their famed St. Mateus festival bringing together artisans, vendors, great restaurants and food trucks, as well as the countries top musical artists.
Viseu is perfectly located near many Dão region vineyards, open to publiic tastings and tours. And if you find yourself near Nelas in September, you might just want to stop by the wine festival.
After a lifetime of going to this city, it was the first time I actually entered inside Viseu’s Sé cathedral. The neighborhood is one of my favorites; quiet streets with shops and an open square with restaurants and taverns with small bites at every corner, it’s a great way to spend the afternoon. We walked around, popping into antique and artisan shops, and finished at the Rossio. Without ever feeling overwhelmed by its size or crowds, there is always something to find pleasure in Viseu…even if just to take a stroll and savor some ice cream.
Lapa dos Dinheiros
Most Serranos {those from the Serra da Estrela}, as well as most living in the interior of Portugal, will often spend their summer days at a praia fluvial. It’s not to say the beach is too far for a day trip, but most times when we want to be by the water we don’t want to make a day of it. And the beauty that I love about the Serra, are the plethora of river beaches in our region,. Many of which are recognized with Blue Flags indicating its high quality in water and surrounding area. In fact, with crystal waters that rival that of turquoise tropical beaches, but with breathtaking mountain backdrops, places like Lapa dos Dinheiros are truly one of kind.
With so many places within a short drive to choose from, it’s no surprise you’ll find solo travelers, families and friend groups stopping by for a short time. Perhaps you feel like a morning hike and dip before a busy day, or the weather is still warm so why not enjoy the sun and a swim after school or a work day. Loriga is one my favorite places, and I’ve often gone for less than an hour. The drives are calming with spectacular views, that you don’t need much else to feel grounded and re-energized. Mother Nature will certainly do that.
Do keep in mind that the area to lounge and pull up a blanket at Lapa dos Dinheiros is smaller than other praia fluvials, so if you’re traveling during peak summer months, you’ll want to arrive early. We had amazing summer-like September weather, enjoying a full afternoon relaxing in the refreshing, and yes very cold, waters. With a great little bar on premise that serves food and drinks, we topped it off with Caipirinhas and Toasted Cheese Sandwiches….all with plenty of sun left to enjoy in the day.
Piodão and Foz d’Egua
Piodao is a darling historical village tucked along the mountains of Serra do Açor, about an hour from the Serra da Estrela area. Recognized by his iconic Xisto stone houses closely built and look as if out of a fairytale. Driving through the windy mountain roads, you’re immeditaley forced to slow down, and transported back into another time. Cars aren’t allowed inside the tiny village, there isn’t room for them which is the best part. One can stroll slowly through the alleyways, admire the charming blue windows and doors, while appreciating all the old richness.
Although remote, it’s beauty remains even while being a popular place to visit. But be forewarned, the drive is full of steep curves…you are traversing a mountain after all. So if you’re prone to motion sickness, come prepared. I can personally say I’ve yet to come here without getting sick, but it won’t stop me from traveling here.
If your fancy a hike, then a few miles away you’ll encounter the picturesque village of Foz d’Egua. Nestled within the lush green valley, with nothing but the sound of the flowing river, a backdrop of old xisto houses and a bridge — it’s like stepping into an enchanting painting, a magical world only mother nature herself could create. The September afternoon was becoming cooler, and because I was still feeling a bit sick, I wasn’t able to do much exploring. But during the warmer months, Foz d’Egua has a magical praia fluvial that is worth spending the day. There really aren’t many places like these natural gems.
Here and There in Serra da Estrela
Moments around my home village, taking early September walks where the clouds loomed and the brisk air certainly made it feel like Autumn was near. I know if I had these views and nature-filled walks right outside my doorstep, I perhaps be more of an autumn/winter person.
I also fully savored a relaxing and reinvigorating afternoon at Aqua Village Resort and Spa. It is truly a wonderful place hidden within the mountains of the Oliveira do Hospital area. I’ve gotten massages here over the years, including one in their “tree houses” over the river, which was an incredible experience hearing the birds and water streams. Ultimate relaxation.
Roots, their restaurant, is also one of my favorite places for a meal or afternoon treat. Without fail we almost always get their charcuterie board served with homemade and local delights. But the best part, is it’s sustainability and how environmentally friendly the resort is. Considered one of the best resort spas, it created the largest geothermal power station of all Portugal’s hotels. I can’t say enough great things about this place!
On our drive to Piodão, we first made a stop at Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Preces. It may be a religiious site that attracts numerous people during their festivities, mass celebrations and picnic gatherings — the mountain views, quiet nature walks, and Baroque church architecture, are sure to attract anyone looking for something new and simple to experience.
