For some time after discovering photos of its forested mountains and picturesque river, I’ve wanted to travel to Ferreira do Zêzere. What I wasn’t expecting, was its enchantingly crystal clear water glistening with serenity. Shades of turquoise, emeralds and bright aquas, made it feel like the waters of the ocean coast. But instead were nestled amongst the quiet of nature and medieval villages. It was mid-September yet felt like the dog days of summer. Located in the Santarém district, this region known for drier warmer climates allows for several warm months that are ideal for enjoying the plentitude of places to discover.

We started our day on the water, relaxing on an hour long boat ride. Highly recommend! It’s a lovely experience, and great way to see the scope of this natural region upfront. Which includes the historical medieval village of Dornes, as well as other small towns with homes atop the cliffs and spectacular views.
Off to lunch we went, to enjoy the local cuisine of river fish. Naturally being located near a vast river, fish is one of the staples in this region. Served in many different ways, it’s always the freshest catch. We savored a platter of the day’s catch, fried and served with some of the best migas and açorda I’ve had. So light, full of flavor and whole ingredients, and very much classic side dishes in Portugal. Some crisp white wine and a refreshingly sweet pavlova with berries, capped off enticing discussions with a lovely view.

Slowly we made our way around the cobblestone roads of Dornes, taking in the hot afternoon and the rich history etched into every withered stone. Beautifully embraced by the peacefulness of the Zêzere River, in Dornes, time stands still. No surprise it’s known for being one of the most beautiful riverside villages in Portugal, and yet still a perfectly quiet and calm location to travel. For the nature and water lovers, but also the history buffs interested in visiting locations like its pentagon-shaped tower at the top of the village; alledgly built by the Order of the Knights Templar.
We intended to end the day cooling off in the river, but with little space covered by shade from the hot sun, we headed home to another river beach {something this is no shortage in Portugal}. So if planning on swimming in Dornes, make sure to find a good spot early in the day, especially if it’s as gorgeous as the weather we had.
This picturesque and quaint corner of Portugal truly has a little something for everyone to savor…..
