Last time I spent a day’s adventure in Aveiro, I was with my cousin … riding the moliceiro boats along the famed canals, once used for transporting salt, walking and gazing at the varying architecture including the city’s known nouveau style, to ending it all with a sunset dinner of local seafood and fish delights alongside the iconic Farol da Praia Barra. This past summer, goodness how a year how come and gone, how quickly life has changed, yet revisiting some of these favorite activities and places with my mother, showing her my eye of Aveiro, was really nice.
This time around, we took a quick walk around the Aveiro Forum, one of the few shopping areas I do enjoy in search of a wedding outfit, then took a masked moliceiro ride beneath an overcast sky, then found our way into a shady table in the bustling SQUARE, where tourists we’re slowly emerging and local musician filled this corner with melodies and noise so many of us had missed.
We had a delight tapas lunch, then had a slow casual walk in direction to the Sé Cathedral and Convento to show my mom. Since the last times I was in the city, I photographed using both my phone and digital camera, this time I was photographing Aveiro with my film camera. Turns out it was a black and white roll, goodness these photos are gems and I can’t wait to show you soon.
We ended our day alongside the Farol at the Praia Barra, watching fishing boats coming into harbor after a day at sea, a local so concentrated and on track to catching a big one until his line sadly broke … taking in that amazing salted cool ocean breeze, filling our lungs with something everyone deserves on a daily basis, gazing at the locals braving that afternoon’s chill and overhearing the conversations of seniors on their afternoon walks.
My mother had such a great day, much needed indeed for both of us. It doesn’t matter how many times we may visit locations, travels change and are different experiences every time, with every different person. Enjoy some more photos of the charming coastal city of Aveiro, a must day trip for your next time in Portugal …..
