The house is trimmed, and gift buying is almost done, now all that’s left to do is to write some thoughtful holiday cards. As we head into the second week of December you may already be receiving holiday cards, and if you’re anything like me, every year the one part of decorating I struggle with is where to put all those beautiful and thoughtful cards. I don’t typically like those store bought pieces, which never seem to hold all the cards. I’ve been hanging them around the garland draped on the entryway of the dining room, but it become too busy and too away from the simple beauty of the Christmas garland. Since this year I’ve been taking a minimalist approach to decorating I wanted to create something that held all my cards and was pretty, without taking too much space.
Cue this DIY hanging display of fresh eucalyptus that is a modern and naturally fragrant way to display your holiday cards. Best of all, it is so simple and inexpensive to make – all you need is fresh greenery, wire and a dowel or long branch you can probably find in your backyard. Even better, it won’t take up any space in your home when you put away all your decorations!
So here’s how to make this festive display…
You’ll Need
- Fresh Eucalyptus {I used both the Silver Dollar and Baby Blue varieties}
- Wooden Dowel {or you can use a branch}
- Floral Wire
- Mini Clothespins
- Ribbon or Twine
Trim the eucalyptus stems into small stems about 6 inches long. {If you have nice thin or straight eucalyptus stems, you can skip this step.}
With the floral wire, wrap the smaller branches together to create 5 long and tapered eucalyptus stems, each measuring about 36 inches long.
Tie your twine, or ribbon tightly on one end of the dowel, or branch. Tie onto the other end of the dowel, with enough length to hang wherever you’d like.
Carefully attach the long strands of eucalyptus onto the branch using floral wire about 4 inches apart.
I love how winter greenery dries just as beautiful as when it is fresh, especially silver dollar eucalyptus. My only tip is to not hang this on a wall where there is heavy walking traffic, although it dries beautifully, dried eucalyptus leaves can easily fall off it they’re handled too much.
Finally attach all your lovely holiday cards to the eucalyptus strands using clothespins as you receive them.
How pretty and festive does this display look! I can’t wait until it’s all filled with heartwarming cards.
Happy holiday crafting!
