Fall is definitely here for good, and I’m only saying it because I gave in and actually decorated with some pumpkins. Naturally they’re all the prettiest mini white ones or lovely gray hues, but they’re still pumpkins, and the extent of what I’ll decorate for fall. I’ve been slow to get into the Autumn mood, it’s been hard to adjust to the changing of the seasons this year, but I am allowing myself to enjoy the simple things this season has to offer.
Even with gorgeous warm days we’ve been having on the east coast, which I’m so thankful for, you do feel a crispness in the air, the kind where you’re reminded that it’s no longer summer. What I do look forward to this season, is the feeling of rejuvenation. It’s like you wipe your hands clean from the old ways, and get ready for a fresh start. It’s a relaxing feeling making lists of fun “fall-y” things you want to do and goals you’d like to accomplish before the year is over. When it’s a new season, say yes to new experiences and cozy up with the things that bring you comfort.
And sometimes what’s old is new again come fall, in this case, my homemade pumpkin spice blend. Guys, this was one of my first recipes on the blog, and if you saw the photos you wouldn’t have even given it a second chance. But it’s really not a recipe, it’s a kitchen must have, especially for Autumn! Anyone can buy spices and mix them in a jar to create something comforting and custom that you can add to everything this time of year!
Is it me or in the last 10 years it’s like the world discovered Pumpkin flavors for the first time. Pumpkin cupcakes, waffles, of course the classic pie, but then you have cookies, and candies, and even beauty products. And don’t get me started on Pumpkin Spice Lattes! Okay, I’ll be honest I’ve had my fair share of them, but the craze only lasted a season for me. It doesn’t taste like pumpkin to me, or coffee for that matter, and always leaves a weird taste in my mouth.
BUT I really do love fall spices in my coffee, but instead of using sweeteners, I add in a few tablespoons of this pumpkin spice right into the coffee grounds before brewing. The house fills with invigorating scents of coffee, but then settles with the comforting aromas of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, allspice and nutmeg. These are your go-to fall spices, at least for me, and should go in all your fall baked goods! They compliment and bring out each other’s flavors perfectly.
On paper I’m calling this a “pumpkin spice” blend, well because I’m pretty sure it’s how I hooked you. But this is really an Autumn Spice Blend. It’s all the flavors and scents you want, and crave, this season. And it’s a versatile fall favorite, pairing with endless sweet and savory options too.
Want in on a little secret about Pumpkin? It’s jam-packed with nutritious benefits, is low in calories and high in Antioxidants, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Carotene, and even its seeds are rich in fiber.
So if you’re in need of a Pumpkin Spice Latte fix, please please please whip up a batch of this spice blend and brew it in your morning coffee tomorrow. You will thank me, actually your wallet will because you won’t need to buy those artificially flavored brews anymore.
